Nanostructures to improve SPR biosensors

Project
The project is focused on the fabrication of nano-structures to couple/decouple Surface Plasmon Waves (SPWs) in order to improve the sensitivity of commercial and research prototypes. Studies using fabrication techniques (like e-beam and photolithography) and surface analysis were made in order to obtain the longest propagation distance for SPWs. This knowledge is used for the fabrication and characterization of prototypes.
Improvement of sensitivity of commercial SPR setups using microstructures and the supply of monolithically integrated prototypes are two of the goods given by the project. Looking at integration with easy fabrication and low manufacturing cost are two of the main keys envisioned during the development of my studies.
The video shows the principle of monolithically integrated Surface Plasmon Resonance device for biosensing purpose and shows the lightning of the first prototype using a VLED.

Here is the detail of the prototype made at the end of 2012 where the gratings are shown under certain conditions of ambient light. Click the image for the interactive display.

The picture on the right shows the VLED prototype within the assembly of the microfluidic system. The picture on the left shows the set of samples used to increase the sensitivity of a commercial device using microgratings. These microgratings are located in the darker area on the left of each sample
